剧集介绍：
时值1969年，王沪生的父亲是个著名学者，在文革初期被抓下落不明；母亲忧急交加病发身亡；姐姐王亚茹（黄梅莹饰）是医生，在送别未婚夫罗冈（郑乾龙饰）去干校后发现自己已有身孕，她不顾罗冈的劝阻偷偷生下女儿，取名罗丹。罗冈突然深夜回京，王亚茹惊喜中并未察觉他神色有异。罗冈带女儿悄然离去，留下一封信，告知他因日记中对文革的真实体会而被打成反革命，受到通缉，生还无望请亚茹忘掉他；在逃亡路上罗冈遗失的女儿丹丹被慧芳的妹妹捡到，慧芳不顾母亲的劝阻收养了她……在王沪生最艰苦的时候，慧芳毅然冲破家庭、社会的种种阻力与沪生结婚。慧芳对妹妹燕子捡来的女婴已萌母爱，沪生却极不情愿，迫于慧芳的坚持只好同意，取名刘小芳。一年后，他们有了自己的儿子王东东；深感失望的宋大成与刘慧芳的好友徐月娟（杨青饰）结婚，但对她毫无感情。文革结束，沪生的父亲得到平反，全家决定搬回小楼。向来自视知识分子看不起慧芳的亚茹以小芳不是王家亲骨肉为由对慧芳百般刁难，慧芳不忍抛下小芳最终没有住进王家；沪生的初恋肖竹心回到北京，慧芳恍然大悟与沪生离婚；小芳偷偷去见爷爷不小心掉进工地陷阱而瘫痪……燕子的大学老师竟是罗冈，他被慧芳伟大的母爱深深感动，并与小芳建立了深厚的感情。偶然间，罗冈发现小芳就是自己丢失的女儿；亚茹经过几年的钻研终于治愈了小芳的瘫痪。生活再次迫使慧芳做出痛苦的选择……
